Over the last 40 years, the overall divorce rate in the U.S. has dropped – Specifically, researchers have discovered that divorce filings in the U.S. have declined by about 24 percent since 1974. Some experts have speculated that this could due to the facts that less people are getting married and that data collection processes have evolved (and may, consequently, be more accurately collecting and reporting this data).
- About 2 in every 3 divorce cases in the U.S. are filed by women – In other words, females file about 67 percent of all divorce petitions filed in the nation. Given that divorce filings in the U.S. have been on the decline over the past couple of decades, some researchers have speculated that women’s changing expectations about marriage – as well as the increase in the number of working mothers in the American workforce – may be two factors related to this trend.
- Divorce rates have been increasing among couples older than 50 – In fact, divorce among people who are 50 and older (or “gray divorce” as it’s often called) has been steadily increasing in recent years. According to a 2011 study, about 1 in every 4 people over 50 had reported going through a divorce within the past 12 months.
- Changing attitudes about relationships and marriage may be impacting divorce trends – In particular, some researchers have suggested that increased cohabitation before marriage, as well as people’s reluctance to jump into marriage (by, for instance, foregoing the shotgun wedding) have also contributed to decline in divorce rates in the U.S.
